娑罗树 娑罗树又叫七叶树，因其每组树叶有七片叶子而得名。这种树原产于印度，相传释迦牟尼的生、死、传教都是在这种树下，所以娑罗树被尊为佛门圣树。我们看到的这两棵娑罗树已经有600多年的树龄了。让我们接着往里走，来看帝王树和配王树。
The Sala Tree
The Sala Tree is called a tree with seven leaves, as there are seven leaves in one bunch of it. The Sala Tree is from India. It was said that Sakyamuni’s birth and nirvana as well as his missionary work were all happened under the Sala Trees. Therefore, the Sala Tree is regarded as the holy tree in Buddhism. The Sala Tree we have seen here is about 600 year old. Now, let’s go inside to see the Emperor Tree and the Empress Tree.
帝王树和配王树 我们看到的这两棵高大的银杏树，是潭柘寺最著名的古树。东边的这棵树是“帝王树”，是当年乾隆皇帝来潭柘寺进香时御封的。这棵帝王树至今已经有千岁高龄，传说，每有一代新皇帝继位登基，就从此树的根部长出一枝新干来，以后逐渐与老干合为一体；每有一朝皇帝驾崩，就从树上掉下一棵树叉。末代皇帝溥仪到潭柘寺来游玩时，曾手指着帝王树上东北侧一根细干，对负责接待的人戏说：“这根小树就是我，因为我不成材，所以它才长成歪脖树。”西边的这棵银杏叫“配王树”，是帝王树的娘娘。可惜这两棵银杏树被错配了鸳鸯，两棵树都是雄性，因此不能结果。
The Emperor Tree and The Empress Tree
These two high ginkgo trees we have seen are the most wel-known ancient trees in Beijing. The tree in east is called the Emperor Tree, which was granted by Emperor Qianlong when he came to Tanzhe Temple for incense offering. The tree is about 1,000 year old. It’s said that there was a new branch growing up from the root and came into the old trunk once there was a new emperor access to the throne, while there was an old branch falling down from the tree once there was an old emperor passed away. When Pu Yi, the Last emperor of China, came to visit Tanzhe Temple, he ever pointed at a little branch in north-eastern side of the Emperor Tree and told people who hosted him for fun that the it was him and grew up to be inclined tree because he was not a good emperor. The ginkgo tree in west is called the Empress Tree. It looks like the wife tree of the Emperor one, but it isn’t a female tree. So it’s impossible for the couple trees to have ginkgo fruits.
 百事如意树 “百事如意树”在毗卢阁前西侧。这是一棵柏树与一棵柿子树相伴共生，像一对情侣一样紧紧地贴在一起。人们取其谐音，称其为百事（柏柿）如意树。据说摸了百如意树，就可以事事随心、大吉大利，特别是新婚夫妇，共同摸了百树如意树，就可以百年好合，白头偕老。
Everything Being Auspicious Tree
Outside of Vairochana Pavilion, there is a tree called Everything Being Auspicious in south-western side. It is a twining tree of cypress and persimmon. In Chinese pronunciation, the combination of cypress and persimmon, Bai-Shi-Ru-Yi, means everything being auspicious. Local people believe that once you touch the tree, you would obtain good luck. Especially to a couple just married, once they touch the tree, they would have a life-long happy marriage to ripe old age.
二乔玉兰 位于毗卢阁前的两棵玉兰树，名叫“二乔玉兰”，是潭柘寺名花之一。三国时期，东吴乔公有两个女儿，都是当时著名的美女，长女大乔嫁给了孙策，次女小乔嫁给了周瑜，因为这种玉兰花紫中带白，兼有两种颜色，十分娇艳，故而人们用“二乔”相誉。接下来我们看毗卢阁。
Magnolia Denudata Called Two Beauties of Qiao
In front of Vairochana Pavilion, there is a rare and precious magnolia denudata tree. It is called Flowers as Two Beauties of Qiao. It is said that in Three-Kingdoms Period there was a Lord Qiao In Eastern Wu Kingdom who had two beautiful daughters. Lord Qiao’s two daughters were the most attractive ladys at that time. The elder sister married the King Sun Ce while the younger one married the General Zhou Yu. The flower in this tree is purple in white. Attracted by its dedication and charms, people named it after Two Beauties of Qiao.
